I’d like to talk about what happened at the South by South West festival on Thursday, March 13.
South by South West is a huge music, film and interactive festival held in Austin, Texas in March. I have always dreamed of going and I hope to make it there someday.
According to Pitchfork, “Two people were killed and 23 were injured when a car plowed into a crowded street at an epicenter of the festival (9th and Red River, outside the Mohawk) around 12:30 a.m.”
The man driving the car was drunk.
The festival continued on, To avoid confusion we plan to carry on with our scheduled daytime events at the Austin Convention Center in order to serve our tens of thousands of participants during this tragic time,” SXSW Managing Director Roland Swenson said.
This story hits me really hard.
I have been to numerous concerts and festivals. There is a sense of belonging there, a sense of safety. No one would expect this to happen.
Those people came to experience something wonderful. Instead, it turned into a day they will never forget.
I believe SXSW did the right thing in continuing the festival.
There is a SXSW Cares Fund, where you can donate to help those that have been affected.
Do not drive drunk. Always find someone to take care of you. Do not get behind the wheel.
My hope is that nothing like this happens again.
My heart goes out to those who have been affected.
